Vivek Agnihotri Says ‘This Is Politics’ In Response To Canadian Filmmaker Calling ‘The Kashmir Files’ Garbage

After Anurag Kashyap, Canadian filmmaker Dylan Mohan Gray weighed in on the debate of sending The Kashmir Files for Oscars to represent India. Gray did not mince his words when he reacted negatively to the notion of sending the Vivek Agnihotri directorial to the Academy award jury as he called it a ‘hatemongering garbage of no artistic merit’.

In an interview with ETimes, Vivek Agnihotri opined that Dylan Mohan Gray’s remarks about the film were a result of ‘lobbying and politics’. ”My political acumen is better than most filmmakers. Itna credit toh mujhe do (Please give me some credit),” he continued, ”I may not be a great filmmaker but I understand politics. Tell me, how did someone sitting in Canada notice my film? That means somebody is lobbying.”

Dylan Mohan Gray’s tweet was in response to Anurag Kashyap opining that the Anupam Kher starrer should not be sent to the Oscars. He tweeted, ”Yeah, actually it’s (hatemongering, revisionist) garbage of no artistic merit and will be a further embarrassment to India if ‘selected’ by the ‘neutral’ board… Anurag Kashyap is just trying to preserve what’s left of the country’s good name”.

Earlier, in an interview with India Today, Gangs of Wasseypur director Anurag Kashyap said, ”What (films) we send for consideration and what kind of films are actually nominated, there is a huge difference there. Only a handful of our films have been nominated for Oscars because we have sent the wrong films. I have not seen The Kashmir Files because it’s not my ideology. But I stick to my words.” This led to a war of words between the two filmmakers.
