'Saw My Father Beat My Mother': Will Smith Opens Up About Childhood 'Trauma' In Interview Filmed Prior To Oscars

Actor Will Smith, who has been keeping a low profile post the Oscar 2022 slapgate controversy, is seen talking about his personal and professional life in the recently-dropped new season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, a talk show hosted by David Letterman. But what’s interesting is the fact that the makers opted to display a disclaimer ‘this episode was filmed prior to the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony,’ before diving into the show.

While Netflix recently dropped all the new episodes of Letterman’s talk show’s new season (fourth) featuring Billie Eilish, Ryan Reynolds and other renowned personalities, the one featuring Smith has garnered a lot of attention as the actor opened up about his ‘life trauma’ with the talk show host.

Talking about his childhood, Smith revealed why he felt like a ‘coward’ during his growing days. “When I was 9 years old, I saw my father beat up my mother and I didn’t do anything (about it). And that just left a traumatic impression on myself as a coward,” the 53-year-old actor said during the conversation. Furthermore, Smith even disclosed how resorting to comedy helped him fight the negativity. “Negativity cannot exist inside a human body when you’re laughing,” Smith added.

Meanwhile, Smith left the entire fraternity stunned when he stormed on the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards in March (earlier this year). While Smith went on to bag an Oscar for his stellar performance in ‘King Richard’ later that night, the board decided to ban the actor from all Academy events for the next 10 years. However, Smith did apologise for his actions as he posted a long note on Instagram calling his behaviour ‘unacceptable and inexcusable’ before resigning from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
