This is not the first time Matt Smith has played a character fighting for power, for their right to the throne. He was last seen playing Prince Philip, in The Crown, a historical drama based on the Royal British family. Talking about the two roles, we asked if there were any similarities between Daemon Targaryen and his character Prince Philip?

In both shows, he is struggling to conquer, to acquire power, so close yet far from the Throne/The Crown, when asked if both character also possess the urge to assert dominance, Matt agreed both have many similar elements. “Yeah, I think inevitably, the prince aspect of it. Both characters are also blond, there are similar elements. I was a bit conscious and nervous about that.”

Daemon Targaryen is a fictional character based on George R R Martin’s books Song Of Ice And Fire and Matt’s performance of Philip on The Crown was rooted in historical facts. Noting the same, he added, “Maybe not nervous, but I was conscious of the similarities, that I gave someone a hard time for being on the throne. But ultimately this is a completely different fantastical world and I felt well wished enough to be on it.”

Notably, the in-house critic praised Matt’s performance in the House Of The Dragon but thought that the screenplay didn’t do justice to his character. It read, “The council makes Daemon the Commander of The City Watch in episode one also known as the gold cloaks, a loyal army of his own but does nothing with it after the first three episodes. He goes through major character arcs in a span of six episodes without giving Matt Smith to explore any of his emotions or showcase his state of mind. Matt is left playing the villain of season one without having to do any real villainous acts.”

House Of The Dragon is a weekly release on Disney+ Hotstar. The nine episodes of the show will be out until the end of November 2022.
