Aamir Khan was recently seen playing a differently-abled character in Laal Singh Chaddha. While the actor’s performance received positive feedback from fans, the filmmakers are now facing legal trouble for the portal. According to reports, a doctor has filed a complaint in court over ‘ridiculing’ comments made about the differently-abled in the film. Apart from Laal Singh Chaddha, the complaint filed in the court of commissioner for persons with disabilities also mentions Taapsee Pannu’s Shabaash Mithu.
The complaint was filed by Dr Satendra Singh, co-founder of Doctors with Disabilities. According to reports, Dr Satendra Singh suffers from 70% locomotor disability and claimed that the film has demeaning remarks against specially-abled people. He has alleged both films violated provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
The complaint has questioned the use of words like word ‘langde/langdi’ (crippled) in the films. In Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir is seen playing Laal who suffers from mental disabilities and some physical disabilities in his younger years. One scene in the film which shows younger Laal getting bullied features the dialogue ‘pakad langde ko (catch the cripple)’.
On the other hand, Shabaash Mithu, a biographical sports drama film based on the life of former Test and ODI captain of the India women’s national cricket team, Mithali Raj, features a song with the work langadi. The song titled, Masti Takita Dhoom, has the lyrics “Atki jo tangadi, gol gattam khali, ho gayi langadi” (The world spun as I tripped, can’t stop limping).
Dr Satendra Singh has said that the words are used to intentionally humiliate someone instead of denoting a disability. The court of commissioner for persons with disabilities has reportedly sought comments from the directors of Laal Singh Chadha, Shabash Mithu as well as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The makers have been asked to submit their responses within 30 days.
This is not the first time Laal Singh Chaddha which also stars Kareena Kapoor, and Mona Singh has faced legal trouble. Earlier complaints were also filed against the markers for allegedly ‘disrespecting the Indian Army and hurting Hindu sentiments’. While there may be some questionable content in the film, the use of Hindi words probably won’t make it at the top of the list.
The use of derogatory words for people with disabilities is cause for concern it is not enough for a case. It is wrong and unacceptable that such derogatory words are used to identify someone and should be called out without a doubt. However, the film is a mirror of society. It isn’t the makers’ intention to influence anyone to do the same.
The case will only divert the court’s time and limited resources to something that can be opened up for discussion on a public platform.
