Fans Outraged As DCEU's ‘Batgirl’ Gets Shelved; What Is The Plan, Warner Bros?

Warner Bros had left the world upset after the San Diego Comic-Con 2022. The studio focused on two on his upcoming releases Shazam Fury Of The Gods! and Black Adam without announcing any new projects, or sharing any updates of the projects which were known to have been greenlit. One of the projects was set to debut a Batman spin-off titled Batgirl led by Leslie Grace.

The film was set to follow Leslie Grace in the title role of Barbara Gordon with a price tag of $70 million. However, the film has now been shelved completely and will not be hitting the big screens or HBO Max. A statement by the studio said, “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor… this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”

The news comes months after DC Comics parent company WarnerMedia merged with Discovery to create Warner Bros. Discovery under cost-cutter CEO David Zaslav. Fans have been upset with the studio for refusing to release any version of the film on HBO Max and have called the move insulting to the cast and crew who worked on the film for years. One tweet read, “Regardless of how you feel about the DCEU, the cancellation of #Batgirl sucks. Leslie Grace was robbed of her moment. Everyone else involved, including Adil and Bilal, deserved better. It’s just more proof that Warner Bros. has no plan.”

Batgirl wrapped filming in late March under Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script by DC’s Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and The Flash screenwriter Christina Hodson. Earlier today, reports revealed that the film was being shelved due to poor performance at the early test screenings and called it “irredeemable”.

TheWrap revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery is “committed to making DC titles big theatrical event films, and Batgirl isn’t that,” and added that the studio is “actively planning” on working with Adil & Bilall and Grace.

DCEU has a limited fan base which has been loyal for years, all through the Christopher Nolan phase to Zack Snyder and now Joss Whedon. There are many who are still waiting for conformation on Snyderverse, while others want Ben Affleck to return. With less fans engaging with each new project Warner Bros is at a loss as a studio. Now with new awaited films being dropped left and right, many are moving on faster than before losing hope of ever seeing their favourite DC superheroes on the big screen.
