Anurag Kashyap Weighs In On Boycott Culture On Twitter; Says 'Sushant Singh Rajput Still Trends Everyday'

After facing a total lockdown of theatres due to the pandemic, Bollywood is now facing the latest boycott trend on social media. Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan and Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha are the biggest targets as they were accused of hurting religious sentiments over controversial tweets and statements. Both the films are set to release on August 11, 2022, and it is yet to see how the boycott trend impacts their box office business.

Nonetheless, the trend has taken over the country with many films fearing to come under the radar over something they might have said or done that can be deemed problematic. In an interview with Indian Express, celebrated director Anurag Kashyap believes that boycotting Bollywood films have somewhat become a norm suggesting that the film’s relevancy depends on its entry into the hashtag. The director is currently gearing up for the release of his directorial Dobaaraa, headlined by Taapsee Pannu.

The 49-year-old director, who is known for his thought-provoking and often controversial films on socio-political themes, further opined that we are ‘living in strange times’. ”Two years later, Sushant Singh Rajput still trends everyday. These are strange times, where everything is to be boycotted. It is not just one side, it is happening across. Everyone is being boycotted-political parties, Indian cricket team, everyone. This country now has a boycott culture. if you are not being boycotted, then you don’t matter,” Anurag Kashyap said.

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput died in 2020 after he was found hanging in his Mumbai apartment. His death turned into a legal and political point of discussion as fans are still seeking justice for the actor’s death. Ardent fans of the late actor trend his name on Twitter everyday since the past two years to fast-track his case.

Interestingly, during an interview with India TV, Kashyap and Pannu jokingly asked the fans to get their upcoming movie, Dobaaraa, trending as well by boycotting it. The latter also said she wants to be in the ‘same league’ as Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan. Dobaaraa will release on August 19, 2022.
