Bollywood is currently plagued by the new boycott trend that is becoming notorious for causing the downfall of films at the box office. Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan and Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha were the latest and biggest victims of the infamous culture. The movies, although created a substantial buzz among moviegoers, became the biggest flops of the respective actors’ careers over the last decade.
Now, Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming Pathaan becomes the next target on social media. Actors, as well as experts in the industry, are speaking out against it and how it could affect the industry. Weighing in on the same, celebrated producer Ekta Kapoor hailed Aamir Khan amidst the flaring #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha trend.
In an interview with Navbharat Times, the 47-year-old called the boycott culture ‘strange’ and slammed the netizens for targetting the same stars who are responsible for boosting the industry to a global level. ”It is so strange we are boycotting the very people who have given the best of business in the industry. All the Khans in the industry, and especially Aamir Khan are legends. We cannot boycott them. Aamir Khan can never be boycotted, the soft ambassador Aamir Khan can not be boycotted”.
Despite Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s plea to the audience to watch Laal Singh Chaddha in theatres, the film failed to reach the Rs 50 crore mark. The huge box office failure is a testimony of the power the ongoing trend holds and how not even the biggest names in Bollywood are immune to it.
